I'm so frustrated that I can't impart more information and nuance to this discussion. I'm not alone in finding that no one asks their parents the questions that need to be answered. I was in a book group at UHart on memoire and this was the refrain amongst all of us. They were older by 10+ years and regretted that they hadn't asked questions of their grandparents and parents about the blitz, camps, and life in Europe pre-war and post. There was a feeling that no one wanted to upset their elders by broaching a touchy subject and we all regret it immensely that we didn't push.
